Phyrst Bar celebrates 50th anniversary

Family. That, according to Phyrst Bar owner Mike Fullington, is the inspiration behind an upcoming documentary about the bar and the people who have found a second home and family within its walls.

The film, “Phyrst 50: A Bar in a College Town,” is a joint venture between the Nittany Valley Society and BlueWhiteTV and is motivated by the stories and faces which have made Phyrst a State College icon for five decades.....read more

The Phyrst Turns 50

Opened in 1967 by Don Bartoletti and soon joined by Ernie Oelbermann, the Phyrst will celebrate with a daylong celebration starting at noon on Saturday and featuring performances by bands including the Phyrst Phamily. The band, for which Ernie was legendary, was a Saturday night sing-along staple for decades.

Bartoletti passed away at a young age, and Oelbermann died in 2015. The bar has changed hands a few times, but Fullington says it’s still a place for everyone.....read more

In Boston, there’s a bar where everybody knows your name. In State College, there’s the Phyrst. A staple of the downtown bar scene, the Irish pub has been around since 1967, and everyone who has lived in State College for even a small amount of time probably has a Phyrst story. This summer, the Phyrst’s own story will be told on the silver screen.

The Nittany Valley Society is sponsoring the making of The Phyrst 50: A Bar in a College Town, a documentary about the bar with the production team of BlueWhiteTV that will debut locally in the fall. The dive bar with its dark atmosphere and low ceilings packs them in for live music and reasonably priced drinks. Among the traditions many recall are Saturday nights with the Phyrst Phamily, cowbells, table wars, Phyrst Girls and the mug club.....read more
